Ursus of Solothurn

Ursus ( † about 303 in Solothurn ) was a martyr of the legendary Theban Legion, and is the patron saint of the Swiss city of Solothurn.

According to legend, he escaped along with Victor of Solothurn and 66 other Christian soldiers massacre of Agaunum ( now St. Maurice in Valais ) and fled to the citadel of Solothurn ( Salodurum ), but there was beheaded along with his companions. He is not only the Solothurn St. Ursus Cathedral consecrated, also founded in the early Middle Ages ecclesiastical Canons bore his name, and to him is due the popular Swiss man's name Urs.
