Urszula Plewka-Schmidt

Urszula Plewka -Schmidt ( born December 29, 1939 in Smogulecka Wies, Poland, † 20 January, 2008 Plawno, Poland) was a Polish artist and teacher. She was the representative of the new art direction Polska Szkola Tkacka (Polish textile school ) and author of monumental mural compositions.

Life

She was a graduate of the Agricultural University of Poznań ( 1964) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań ( later Art University of Poznań). A diploma she received in 1966 from the Faculty of painting in the studio of M. Szmanda. This college, she was connected until 1992.

An artistic debut was in the studio of Magdalena Abakanowicz. From 1980 she ran the studio for color theory at the Faculty of Interior Architecture. In 1991 she founded the Schola Posnaniensis, the Academy of Applied Arts, where she was until 2007 Rector and professor.

Work

At the beginning of her artistic career in the 1970s emerged woven shapes and spatial structures, metal structures, which were covered with hand-woven material. Date to this period also the actions that reflect the emergence of tissue from the interior spaces, such as "Landscape Actions " ( " Działania pejzażowe " ), which were only recorded with the photo camera and had the characteristics of a performance. In the later period Plewka -Schmidt returns to the traditional textile weaving plants.

Attendance at the 5th International Biennial of major textile art in Lausanne (5th Biennale Internationale de la Tapisserie, 1971) has opened the door to the international scene and thus paved the way to many exhibitions Plewka - Schmidt.

As a breakthrough in the creative work of Plewka -Schmidt, the presentation is seen in 1979 in Lausanne, where two monumental works were shown side by side during the International Biennial of Textile Art: " Madonna Kruzlowa " ( " Madonna z Krużlowej ") and " Marilyn Monroe " - the clash of two ideals of beauty, past and present, which was to interpret the contribution of the artist to the discussion of the artists in the 20th century on the mutual penetration of different areas of art.

The theme that often recurs in the works of Plewka -Schmidt, is the reflection on time, the passage of time, the influence of time on the people and the interpretation of the tradition of past eras. In her wall compositions, the artist transposed both the known works of folk art, as well as the cult objects.
