Ushakov Island

The Ushakov Island (Russian Остров Ушакова / Ostrow Ushakov ) is a Russia belongs, 328 km ² large, isolated island in the Arctic Ocean, midway between Franz Josef Land and Severnaya Zemlya, in the northern Kara Sea. Forty-five percent of its surface is covered by glaciers, their greatest height is 294 m. The next country is the lonely meadow Island, 140 km to the south. Due to its extreme northern location, the sea surrounding the Ushakov Island is covered in winter with ice and also during the short summer with ice floes.

History

The island was discovered in 1935, when the few remaining unknown areas of the northern Kara Sea were explored by an expedition under the leadership of the Soviet polar explorer, cartographer and oceanographers Georgy Ushakov with the icebreaker Sadko. The island was named after Ushakov. A polar station on the Ushakov Island was founded in 1954. The first wintering on the island was carried out from 1954 to 1955.
