Georgy Ushakov

Georgy Alexeyevich Ushakov (Russian Георгий Алексеевич Ушаков; * 17 Januarjul / January 30 1901greg in Lasarewo, Amur Oblast, .. † December 3, 1963 in Moscow) was a Soviet geographer and Arctic explorer.

In 1926 he erected the first Soviet settlement on the Wrangel Island. This still exists today and is named in honor of the founder Uschakowski.

1930-1931 he explored together with the geologist Nikolai Nikolayevich Urwanzew Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. In addition to numerous new discoveries of smaller islands, the first complete mapping of the archipelago dates back to the expedition.

In 1935, he headed a deep-sea expedition in the Arctic Ocean aboard the icebreaker Sadko.

At Ushakov, the numerous awards, including the Order of Lenin, received today remember a town and a cape on Wrangel Island, an island in the Kara Sea, the Ushakov - nunataks in Enderbyland in Antarctica and a river on the island of October Revolution.

Ushakov died in Moscow, but was buried in Severnaya Zemlya.
