Nikolay Urvantsev

Nikolai Nikolayevich Urwanzew (Russian Николай Николаевич Урванцев, scientific transliteration Nikolai Nikolaevich Urvancev; * 17 Januarjul / January 29 1893greg in Lukojanow, Nizhny Novgorod Governorate, .. † 20 February 1985) was a Soviet geologist and Arctic explorer.

Urwanzew was one of those geologists who until 1922 in the area of on the basis of this discovery in 1935 by the Politburo of the CPSU built city of Norilsk found mineral resources during an expedition in 1919. 1931-1933 he explored together with the Soviet geographer Georgi Alexeyevich Ushakov Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. Urwanzew, who later held a chair of Arctic Geology, has been rewarded with numerous honors, including the Order of Lenin and the Przewalski's gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society. The Urwanzev Rock in Mühlig -Hofmann Mountains of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica are named after him.
