The USNS Narragansett (T- ATF -167 ) is a tug of the United States Navy and is part of the Powhatan class. She served from 1979 to 1999 in the U.S. Navy, after which it was transferred to the reserve fleet. The withdrawal from the ship register was made on June 5, 2002. Currently the ship is owned by the NAVAIR at Station Patuxent River.

History

The ship was laid on May 5, 1977 the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin on Kiel. The launch took place on 12 May 1979 for further outfitting the Narragansett on November 9, 1979, transferred to the Military Sealift Command of the U.S. Navy.

She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet. In the fall of 1983, she was employed at the search operation following the downing of Korean Airlines Flight 007 by Soviet interceptors. From aboard the tug a diving robot to investigate the seabed was used. Beginning of April 1992 dragged the tractor then the battleship Missouri after his last Scrapping of Long Beach, California to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.

The tractor was provided on 18 October 1999 out of service and transferred to the reserve fleet. After removal from the register of ships in June 2002, the Narragansett was transferred as a harbor tug at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.
