The USNS Sioux (T- ATF 171 ) is a tug of the United States Navy and is part of the Powhatan class. It is used since 1981 in the U.S. Navy.
History
The ship was laid on March 22, 1979 at the Marinette Marine Shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin on Kiel. The launch took place on 15 November 1980, after further outfitting the Sioux on May 1, 1981, transferred to the Military Sealift Command of the U.S. Navy.
It was originally assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet, but currently is part of the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force and is used worldwide.
In spring 1987, the tug accompanied the hospital ship Mercy on his patrol car. In January 1990 he was involved in the rescue of a ditched UH -60 Seahawk.
Regularly, the Sioux of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is required to haul the unpowered Floating Instrument Platform into the field of research.
