History

The Atlanta 1975 was given at Newport News Shipbuilding in order. Three years later, at the shipyard in Newport News, the keel was laid, after exactly two years the construction was completed and christened the ship by the wife of Sam Nunn to the city of Atlanta in Georgia. In 1982 the ship in the United States Navy was put into service.

1986 ran the Atlanta in the Strait of Gibraltar on reason. Here, the sonar system and the front ballast tank were damaged. The submarine was able to drive with its own drive to Gibraltar. After a week of intensive investigations of the damage the Atlanta also ran with their own drive to Norfolk, where the damage was repaired.

Back in 1999, the Atlanta was decommissioned. This was done for reasons of cost, the boat was originally planned for a long time 30-35 years of service. The hull is waiting in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard for dismantling under the Ship - Submarine Recycling Program, to be launched in 2011.

In her 17- year career, the Atlanta completed six transfers into the Mediterranean Sea and three in the West Atlantic.
