History

The Augusta, named after the city of Augusta, Maine, was established on 1 April 1982 with Electric Boat keel, the launch took place on 21 January in 1984 and was commissioned into the United States Navy on 19 January 1985.

The boat caused a sensation when it was implicated in October of 1986 in the incidents involving the sinking of the Soviet submarine K -219. The Augusta had set off in pursuit of the K -219 under Captain James of Suskil, and was on 3 October aboard the K -219 an explosion in a missile silo. After the K -219 was able to prevent the decline initially, reached a Soviet freighter that Fyodor Bredkin, the crash site east of Bermuda to tow the distressed vessel, but this failed. After the K -219 was sunk on 6 October, the USS Augusta left the area and went on patrol, with the persecution of the K -279, a boat of 667B project was recorded. It probably came to a collision of Augusta with the K - 279th Then talk captured images of the K -279 with inserted bug for this thesis.

The Augusta returned to her base back to Groton, Connecticut, where their sonar equipment was repaired. The cost of repairs was estimated at about 3 million U.S. dollars.

In September 2007, the Augusta ended its last mission trip. In February 2008, the boat was officially removed from the fleet, the inactivation takes place in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. On February 11, 2009, she was decommissioned and should be canceled in the Ship- Submarine Recycling Program.
