The USS Charlotte ( SSN -766 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles- class.

History

Construction

The contract to build the Charlotte, was awarded on 6 February 1987 at the Newport News Shipbuilding, where the keel was laid August 17, 1990. The launch took place on 3 October 1992, the ship was christened by Mrs. Mary McComack after the city of Charlotte in North Carolina. Commissioned into the U.S. Navy finally took place on 16 September 1994. The first commander of the ship was Commander Michael Matthews.

The first use led the Charlotte in 1997 for the Naval Intelligence in the Western Pacific, and later with the carrier battle group led by the USS Independence (CV- 62) in the Persian Gulf. As of June 2004, the U- boat was part of a battle group led by the USS Belleau Wood ( LHA -3)

The end of 2005 broke the Charlotte to overhaul period in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on. The path led the submarine under the Arctic ice cap, where it appeared by 155 cm thick ice. Ice of this thickness could only break through the ship, as it is part of the third contract section of the class whose hydroplanes were in contrast to the earlier boats moved to the shell, and are no longer in the tower. This was increased in contrast to previous boot for this very purpose. End of October 2007 swept the Charlotte in her home port of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii back.

The end of 2010 the submarine was transferred to the Western Pacific.
