The USS Chicago ( SSN -721 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles- class.

History

The Chicago was left on 27 October 1986 at Newport News Shipbuilding launched and christened by Mrs. Vicki Ann Paisley after the city of Chicago. Nearly two years later, the boat was put into service, its first commander was Commander Robert Avery.

In 1990, the Chicago participated in Operation Desert Storm. In early 1996, a Predator drone from the U- boat was controlled. The drone reached a height of 6000 meters and took off up to 185 miles from the submarine, was the at a depth of about 60 feet ( periscope depth ).

In summer 2005 a new Periskopsystem was tested aboard the Chicago, the so-called virtual periscope. Here is filming a camera mounted on the tower the water surface and a processor on board the submarine calculated from the incident light, the location of objects on the water surface. However, the resolution was not sufficient to identify a type of ship. The system can make up a 30 -meter object from a depth of 30 to 60 meters at a distance of one nautical mile (about 1.85 km).

In 2007, Chicago participated in Exercise Malibor. In the Gulf of Bengal, Indian, Australian, Japanese and Singaporean naval forces were involved in addition to two American aircraft carriers and two Arleigh Burke destroyers as well. In early 2009 moved the submarine for six months in the Pacific.

USS Chicago in fiction

In Tom Clancy's novel In the storm the Chicago plays an important role in the defense of a Russian offensive against Europe. Also in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the submarine has a small appearance.
