The USS Columbus ( SSN -762 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles- class. It was named after the city of Columbus in Ohio.

History

SSN -762 in 1986 was commissioned and placed in early 1991 at Electric Boat in Kiel. The construction in dry dock was one and a half years, on 1 August the boat Columbus was baptized and was launched. After complete final outfitting at the pier and the first test drives the submarine was officially put into service in June 1993. A year later, the boat was the so-called Post Shakedown Availability docked again, until September last problems have been fixed. Then the Columbus moved to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where she began her first deployment in the Western Pacific journey from the end of 1995.

2004 ended the Columbus use a drive that began in October 2003 and docked in the autumn in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to undergo an overhaul.

Mid-April 2006 fell to Columbus from the public eye, when seven crew members were accused at the expense of two shipmates, among others, for assault, breach of duty and hazing. The ranks of the defendants ranged from Petty Officer Third Class up to Senior Chief Petty Officer. On 13 June, the commander of the boat was then replaced ..
