The contract for the construction of the boat was on 28 February 1975 at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut. The keel of the boat fell on July 4, 1976, the bicentennial of the independence of the United States. At the time of keel laying the boat was still unnamed.

As of 2003, the conversion of Florida began in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to a submarine with cruise missiles. In 2006 she was re-assigned to the fleet. During the civil war in Libya, the Florida drove up the coast of the North African country and fired on March 19, 2011 as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn cruise missiles of the type UGM -109 Tomahawk on Libyan targets. Throughout the operation, she shot over 90 cruise missiles. This was the first use of the converted Ohio - boats.
