USS Guardfish (SSN-612)

The USS Guard Fish (SSN -612 ) was a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy. She was a member of the Thresher / Permit class.

History

THe Guard Fish in 1960 commissioned and placed in February 1961 at New York Shipbuilding in Kiel. The launch was delayed by the sinking of the USS Thresher (SSN -593 ) until 1965, until the end of 1966 the boat was officially put into service.

First test drives took place in 1966 and 1967 in the Caribbean and the waters of Central America, following the Guard Fish was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After the first installation in the western Pacific, the Guard Fish was sent back into the Atlantic, where she received the SUBSAFE package at Ingalls Shipbuilding. This lasted until 1970, after which the boat was again transferred to the Pacific. After 612 dives took place in 1974, a refill of nuclear fuel, this time on the west coast of the Mare Iceland Naval Shipyard.

After the boat was moved to Vallejo, California. In 1975, the boat was radioactively contaminated when the wind depleted deposits from the primary circuit, which should be dumped, blew back on board. Shortly afterwards, was carried out at Mare Iceland an overhaul which lasted until 1977.

He was followed by several relocations in the western Pacific Ocean, to the Guard Fish was placed out of service in 1992. In the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, she was subsequently canceled in the Ship- Submarine Recycling Program.
