The USS Leftwich (DD -984 ) was a destroyer of the Spruance class.

History

The keel laying of Leftwich took place at Ingalls Shipbuilding on 12 November 1976. The destroyer in 1978 left from the stack and placed in 1979 in the United States Navy in service.

On 29 November 1982, the Leftwich collided during a training exercise near the United States Naval Base Subic Bay with the emerging submarine USS Thomas A. Edison ( SSBN- 610). Both ships were damaged, while Leftwich was repaired, Edison was asked unrepaired two months later decommissioned.

From 1985 onward, Leftwich was stationed at Pearl Harbor, which remained her home port for the remainder of their term of service.

During the Iran -Iraq war, she served in the Persian Gulf in Operation Nimble Archer opened fire in retaliation for Iranian attacks on tankers oil platforms in the Gulf. Later she was involved in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where they attacked Iraq with cruise missiles. In addition, the Leftwich later helped in the enforcement of the embargo against Iraq, by participating in home visits from cargo ships. Overall, Leftwich moved into their service eight times.
