History

SSBN -644 was commissioned on November 1, 1962 at Newport News Shipbuilding in order and placed there in the summer of 1963 at Kiel. After almost one and a half years, the boat was launched and was baptized, the end of 1965, the Lewis and Clark was finally put into service.

In the summer of 1972, the boat finished the conversion of their missile bays, before the boat was the UGM -27 Polaris shoot, then later the more modern UGM -73 Poseidon. On December 18, the Lewis and Clark scored in the test for the first time from a Poseidon. 1981 shot from the boat only four more missiles and then docked to its original shipyard in order to be overhauled there.

1985 scored the SSBN as a test for another four from Poseidon, on 27 June 1992, the boat was finally decommissioned and broken up in 1996 in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as part of the Ship - Submarine Recycling Program.

The tower and the hydroplanes of the Lewis and Clark were preserved and are now in the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina issued.
