The USS New York City (SSN -696 ) was a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and was among the Los Angeles - class. The boat was named explicitly City to the city of New York, which is why the suffix City was hung on the name for the first time. Earlier ships were named USS New York and was named after the 11th state.

History

The contract SSN -696 was issued in early 1972 to build the Electric Boat. The end of 1973 the submarine was placed on the yard of the Group in Groton, Connecticut on Kiel. After there had been problems in the construction, the boat could run from the stack until June 1977. Godmother was the wife of the former defense minister and later minister of energy, James R. Schlesinger. In March 1979, the New York City was officially put into service.

After almost exactly 18 years of service to New York City was made on 30 April 1997 out of service. This saved the Navy money that would otherwise be forthcoming for the refilling of the nuclear reactor with nuclear fuel must be issued. As the boat anyway the outdated Flight I class belonged, lacking the Vertical Launching System of the newer boats that decommissioning was a more logical sequence.
