The USS Norfolk ( SSN -714 ), a nuclear submarine of the Los Angeles-class, is the second ship of the United States Navy which was named after the city of Norfolk, Virginia.

History

SSN -714 was commissioned in 1976 and 1979 laid at Newport News Shipbuilding in Kiel. 1981 ran the Norfolk from the stack and was baptized in 1983 the commissioning took place. On 23 July 1988, the first shooting took place by a cord 48 mod.5 ( ADCAP ) heavyweight torpedo, as the Norfolk sank the decommissioned destroyer USS Jonas Ingram (DD -938 ).

The Norfolk was between 1991 and 1993 for overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

On 25 August 2004, the Norfolk returned to Norfolk after they had again a 22 -month Engineering Refueling Overhaul ( ERO) finished in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. 2006/2007 the ship sailed on the side of USS Nassau ( LHA -4), the end of 2007 was followed by another installation. In May 2008, the Norfolk Operation Arabian Shark took part in the multinational exercise. In 2010 she moved for six months in European and Middle Eastern waters.
