USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687)

The USS Richard B. Russell ( SSN -687 ) was a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and was a member of the Sturgeon class. She was named after the U.S. senator Richard B. Russell.

History

The Richard B. Russell in 1969, announced at the end of the year in order and laid in October 1971 by Newport News Shipbuilding on Kiel. After a construction period of about two years, the boat ran in early 1974 batch and was put into service in 1975 with the Navy.

Shortly after the commissioning of Russell was mounted directly behind the tower a housing in which an antenna was placed with a buoy so that the boat could get in touch with the military leadership also from great depths. This Russell Bustle called structure was directly integrated in the fuselage in later submarine classes.

A few years later, in 1982, Russell was converted in Iceland Naval Shipyard Mare to a boot for special applications. As such it remained until 1993 in service on 1 July, she was assigned to the reserve fleet. The official removal from the Naval Vessel Register on 24 June 1994. Effect from 1 October 2001, the separation began as part of the Ship - Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
