USS Sangamon (CVE-26)
The USS Sangamon was an escort aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy in World War II. As namesake was a river in the U.S. state of Illinois Godfather.
In Kiel she was placed as a civilian tanker Esso Trenton. On October 22, 1940, the ship of the U.S. Navy was bought for use as a fleet tanker and then renamed USS Sangamon (AO -28).
On 15 July 1943, she was finally determined after several reclassifications to the escort carrier with the identifier CVE -26. On February 11, 1948, the ship was decommissioned and sold to a civilian company.
