The USS Spruance (DDG -111 ) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and is one of the Arleigh Burke - class. It is named after Admiral Raymond A. Spruance, who has served in the Pacific War as commander of the American fleet.
History
DDG -111 was commissioned in 2002. In May 2009, Bath Iron Works laid the keel of destroyer. Just one year later, the baptism took place in June 2010. Godmother was Ellen Spruance Holscher, granddaughter of Admiral. A day later, the ship was launched from the dock. On 1 September 2011, the Spruance left the shipyard and began the drive to Key West, Florida, where she was put into service on 1 October 2011. Following the destroyer was stationed in San Diego, California. The Spruance Destroyer Squadron is part of the 23 ( The Little Beavers ).
