Utansjö

Utansjö is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province Västernorrlands County, in the historical province of Ångermanland.

Location

Utansjö belongs to the municipality Härnösand. The village is located about 15 km as the crow north of the center of the provincial capital, at the same time Gemeindezentralort Härnösand, on the shore of the lake near the southwestern Mortsjön and Mündungsarms of Ångermanälven in the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea. From Mortsjön the Utansjöån flows to Ångermanälven and overcomes the short distance a vertical drop of over 35 meters.

A little north of Utansjö crosses the European route 4 with the Högakustenbrücke opened in 1997, the second longest suspension bridge in Scandinavia to support width and second highest building in Sweden, the Ångermanälven. Before the bridge, the National Highway 90 branches off to the Ångermanälven up to Meselefors on the European road 45 ( Inlandsvägen ) follows in the south of Lapland. Utansjö is located on the opened on this section of railway line in 1893 Sundsvall - Långsele ( Ådalsbanan ), which is currently being developed as a southern extension of the Botniabanan for high -speed traffic with partly new route.

History

Utansjö was mentioned in 1542 in a tax collection for the Ångermanland. As a result the place for parish Högsjö, which was built in the 14th century and 1789 churches located two kilometers from Utansjö on the far northern shores of Mortsjön belonged. 1738 took on the banks of Ångermanälven an ironworks, Utansjö bruk, the production, which was until 1878 in operation. After twenty year hiatus was a pulp mill in place of the factory in 1898. At the same time was a small hydroelectric power plant with an output of 250 kW in operation, which used the energy of the Utansjöån for their care.

2008 closed the last owner, the Rottneros AB, the factory. The population of the town declined since the mid-20th century (1960: eur 513 ) by more than half.
