Uzbek Jews

Uzbek Jews (Hebrew יהדות אוזבקיסטן ) are split into two different faiths: the traditional Bukharian Jewish community and the progressive Ashkenazi community of European origin.

Most Uzbek Jews are Ashkenazim now - due to the emigration of Jews from Bukhara to Israel and the United States.

Judaism in the Ferghana Valley

Semyon Abdurakhmanov is the head of the Ferghana Jewish community. There are a total of six synagogues in the valley. There are several hundred Jews in Fergana, Namangan, Kokand - and a total of 800 in the region. Abdurakhmanov has said that the biggest problem for the Jewish community on the one hand the bad situation of the Uzbek economy, on the other, the stronger days passing anti-Semitism - especially due to the increasing radicalization of Muslims in the area.

During the Andijan massacre in May 2005, the Israeli embassy in Tashkent Abdurakhmanov had asked to make a list of the Uzbek Jews Andi Chan - " in the event that there seems to be the need to have to transport people over airlift to Israel. "
