Uzhhorod–Košice broad-gauge track

The railway line is a Uzhhorod - Košice executed in broad gauge single-track railway line, which runs primarily in eastern Slovakia and is intended for the transportation of iron ore from Ukraine to the large U.S. Steel Košice steel mill in Haniska in Košice.

After the establishment of the steel plant in the 1960s, the demand for iron ore increased by leaps and bounds, and the existing in Čierna Tisou border station was not especially in winter in a position to cope with the traffic. This was mainly because that the railroad of the former Czechoslovakia was operated with standard gauge and the railway of the Soviet Union in broad gauge, so that all goods had to be transhipped. Thus, it was decided by the Czechoslovakian government to build a railway line on the Soviet standard to facilitate transport to the steel plant. Construction began on November 4, 1965. Already half a year later, on 1 May 1966 the route was opened in 1978 the line was electrified.

On 7 May 2007, the Russian Railways ( RZD) and the Slovak Ministry of Transport, Posts and Telecommunications signed a Memorandum of Understanding which provides for the construction of a broad-gauge route Košice - Vienna via Bratislava.
