Václav Brožík

Václav Brožík ( born March 5, 1851 in Zelezny Hamr at Třemošná, Bohemia, † April 15, 1901 in Paris) was a Czech painter.

Life

Václav Brožík studied from 1868 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Emil Lauffer, where he exhibited his first picture. In 1871 he continued his studies at the Dresden Academy and from 1873 at the Munich Academy. He was particularly influenced by Carl Theodor von Piloty. After a short stay in Prague, he lived from 1876 in Paris. 1879 Brožík took a study trip to the Netherlands.

By marrying the daughter of a Parisian art dealer, he was given access to the higher circles of the city. He shuttled between Paris and Prague, where he taught at the Academy since 1893. In 1896 he became a member of the Académie des beaux -arts in Paris. After his sudden death from heart disease Brožík was buried in the cemetery Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris.

Václav brozik was a member of the artist association Umělecká beseda. Yet the artist's lifetime appeared in 1893 in the U.S. a stamp with a motif for a picture Brožíks ( Columbus soliciting aid of Isabella ).

His students included, among others, the sculptor Alois Rieber.

Importance

Václav Brožík was one of the most important Czech painter of the 19th century and the most important representative of Czech history painting. His history paintings, mainly from the Czech history, were very successful and are an academic style of painting obliged. His most famous painting is Jan Hus at the Council of Constance dar.
