Väinö Raitio

Väinö Eerikki Raitio ( born April 15, 1891 in Sortavala, Grand Duchy of Finland, † November 10, 1945 in Helsinki) was a Finnish composer.

Raitio studied at the Music Institute in Helsinki (now the Sibelius Academy ) at Erkki Melartin and Erik Furuhjelm 1916-17 and completed postgraduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory. He completed his training in Berlin ( 1921) and in Paris ( 1925-26 ), where he became acquainted with the music of Claude Debussy and Scriabin Alexander.

From 1926 to 1932 he was a teacher of composition in Viipuri, after which he lived in Helsinki. In addition to several symphonic poems composed among others Raitio Operas and ballets, chamber music, and numerous choral works and songs.
