Valdai International Discussion Club
The International discussion club " Valdai " (Russian Международный дискуссионный клуб " Валдай » ) is an annual meeting forming the well-known experts who deal with the external and internal policy of Russia.
History
The club was established in September 2004 on the initiative of the press agency RIA Novosti, the Council for Foreign and Defence Policy of Russia, the newspaper "The Moscow Times " and the magazines " Russia in world politics " and " Russia Profile ".
Edition 2004
The first meeting of the club took place in September 2004 in Veliky Novgorod place, close to the Waldaisees. The theme of the meeting was: " Russia turn of the century - Hopes and facts." The participants met with Vladimir Putin.
Edition 2005
The second meeting (2005) took place on the comfortable ship " Alexander Radishchev " on the Moscow - Volga Canal from Moscow to Tver and back. The theme of the meeting was: " Russia - a political kaleidoscope ."
Edition 2006
The third meeting (2006) was held in Moscow and in the center of the West Siberian oil field region Khanty-Mansiysk. The topic was " Global energetics of the 21st century - the role and place of Russia".
Edition 2007
The fourth meeting (2007) was organized in the capital of Tatarstan, Kazan. There about 100 politicians and journalists from 12 countries were invited. It took part: the Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Borisovich Ivanov and the Patriarch Alexius II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. The participants met in Sochi with Vladimir Putin.
Edition 2008
The fifth meeting (2008) was held in Rostov-on- Don. The theme was: " The role of Russia in the global geopolitical revolution of the 21st century." The meeting was attended by President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin.
Edition 2009
The sixth meeting (2009) was held in the Far Eastern Yakutsk. The participants discussed " Russia and the West - Past and Future".
Edition 2010
The seventh meeting (2010) was held in Saint Petersburg. The participants visited the Prime Minister Putin at his summer residence in Sochi.
Among the participants of the Waldaiklubs among others heard Alexander Rahr.
