Valentin Blatz

Valentin Blatz ( born October 1, 1826 in Miltenberg, † May 26, 1894 in Saint Paul ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company.

Biography

Valentin Blatz was born in 1826 in the Bavarian town of Miltenberg. His parents were Casper and Barbara Blatz. After his education, he started at age 14 to work in his father's brewery. After completing his training, he spent several years in other breweries in Wurzburg, Augsburg and Munich.

After his military service, he emigrated in August 1848 in the United States. There he worked for the brewery Philip Born in Buffalo, before he settled in Milwaukee, a then popular destination for German emigrants.

First Blatz worked in various breweries, including as a master brewer and foremen for Johann Braun's City Brewery. After five years, Blatz started his own business and opened his own brewery next to the brown. After Braun's death in 1852 he married his widow, Louise Brown, and put the two companies together.

The brewery grew in the coming decades and in 1889 officially registered as Valentin Blatz Brewing Company. Blatz took until his death true the office of President.

Besides his work for the brewery Blatz was also active in railway transportation and real estate transactions. From 1866 to 1894 he was president of the Second Ward Savings Bank. In addition, he served from 1872 to 1873 the office of Alderman in Milwaukee. He was one of those responsible for the organization of the industrial exhibition in 1880 in Milwaukee.

Blatz became involved in various companies in Milwaukee. He was also a member of the Milwaukee Old Settlers Society, the Milwaukee Brewers Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

Blatz died in 1894 on his return to Milwaukee in Saint Paul. It is located on the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee buried. At the time of his death Blatz was one of the richest men in Milwaukee. His sons Albert and Valentine, Jr. and his son John Kremer, took over the management of the establishment.
