Valery Grigoryevich Korzun (Russian Валерий Григорьевич Корзун; born March 5, 1953 in Krasny Sulin, Rostov Oblast, Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut.

Training

Korsun graduated in 1974 from its pilot training and then served in the Air Force as a military pilot, was commander of a squadron and parachutists ( 400 jumps ). In 1987 he graduated from the Gagarin Air Force Academy and was taken in March of the same year in the cosmonaut squad. In December he began a half years of basic training in " Star City ".

Spaceman activity

From September 1989 Korsun trained for use with different crews to the space station Mir. From October 1992, he was part of a cosmonaut group was preparing for a rescue mission. Between spring 1994 and the summer of the following year he was preparing for a long stay on Mir.

Korsun received his first Einatzbefehl for a space flight in October 1995. He was standing in for the indisposed Gennadi Manakov and commanded the Franco- Russian mission " Cassiopée ", which began with the launch of Soyuz TM -24 in August 1996. While the French Claudie André- Deshays returned to Earth after two weeks, remained Korsun and his flight engineer Kaleri until early March 1997 at the Mir station.

After that, Korsun prepared as commander of ISS Expedition 5 for his second flight. The mission began in early June 2002 on board the U.S. space shuttle Endeavour STS- 111. Together with the American Whitson and his Russian colleague Treschev worked Korsun six months aboard the International Space Station. In early December 2002, he was again picked up by the shuttle Endeavour (STS -113 ) with his crew and taken to Earth.

In September 2003, Korsun retired from active service and has since cosmonauts deputy head of the training center.

Korsun and his wife have a son.
