Valtazar Bogišić

Valtazar Bogisic, also Baltazar Bogisic, ( born December 20 1834 in Cavtat, † April 24, 1908 in Rijeka, nicknamed Baldo ) was a Serbian lawyer and sociologist from Dalmatia. Bogisic was known primarily through the exploration of the common law. He is often referred to as the predecessor of the legal sociologist Eugen Ehrlich. He is regarded by his extensive studies in Munich, Heidelberg, Vienna and Berlin as an important representative of the Historical School of Law.

His main work is the General Property Act book for the Fürstentrum Montenegro from 1888. The Code is intended as a codification of civil law, but does not include the family and inheritance law. It is characterized by a high recognition of customary law and justice as the primary source of law.
