Van Dale

The Great Dictionary of the Dutch language ( Dutch: Van Dale Groot van de Nederlandse taal Dictionary ) is the most important dictionary of the Dutch language presence. It is published by the publisher Van Dale Lexicografie bv. The 14th edition was published in 2005 and consists of three volumes and a CD- ROM. In Dutch, the dictionary is also known as The thick Van Dale or The great Van Dale.

History

The first edition of the dictionary was published in 1864 under the title Nieuw Nederlandsche taal Dictionary (German: New Dictionary of the Dutch language ) and has been edited by IM Calisch and NS Calisch. It was based on an older dictionary Dutch-French. The second edition has been redesigned by Johan Hendrik van Dale and thoroughly revised, taking the new system of de Vries and te Winkel 1863 adapting the spelling, in 1883 became the basis of the letter of the Dutch. Van Dale died in 1872, shortly before the publication of the last parts of the dictionary. Work on it was completed by his pupil, January Manhave. Since the fourth edition of 1898, the dictionary is named van Dales.

Content

The dictionary describes in his own words " the current Dutch, with a look back at the past 150 years." For this reason, it also lists words and phrases that have become obsolete. The importance of the lemmas listed in chronological order, so that in the first place which is etymologically oldest.
