Vanadyl sulphate, VOSO4, is an inorganic compound of vanadium.

Occurrence

Like most water-soluble sulfates, one finds it very rare in nature. The anhydrous form is Pauflerit, a mineral fumaroles origin. The hydrates are also very rare; Hexahydrate ( Stanleyit ), Pentahydrate ( Minasragrit, Orthominasragrit and Anorthominasragrit ) and trihydrate ( Bobjonesit ).

Representation

The preparation of vanadyl sulfate is usually carried out by the reduction of vanadium (V ) oxide, sulfur dioxide:

Properties

The highly hygroscopic, blue solid is one of the most common sources of vanadium in the laboratory. It contains the Vanadylion, VO2 , which has been referred to as " stable diatomic ion".

In aqueous solution, the salt is crystallized as the pentahydrate, the fifth water is not bound to the metal. As seen complex, this has an octahedral structure with oxygen, water and a sulfate as four ligands. The V = O bond length is 160 pm, thus it is 50 pm shorter than the V- OH2 bonds. In solution, the sulfate ion dissociates very quickly.

The pentahydrate and trihydrate have a monoclinic crystal structure with space group P21 / a

In acidic solution results in the oxidation of vanadyl sulfate yellow colored vanadyl ( V ) derivatives. Reduction, e.g. with zinc, resulting vanadium ( III) - and vanadium (II) - derivatives, which are characteristic of green and purple.

Use

In most cases, vanadyl sulfate is a brew Royal reactant for other Vanadylderivate such as vanadium (IV ) oxy - (acetylacetonate )

Vanadyl sulfate is an intermediate product in the extraction of vanadium from crude oil residues, a major commercial source of vanadium.

Vanadyl sulfate is mainly abroad, for example in the USA, included in some dietary supplements. Especially in the field of bodybuilding useful effects of vanadyl sulfate are advertised, but an assignable effect could not be found. Vanadyl compounds are designed to mimic the effect of insulin, the mode of action is similar to that described by chromium picolinate. In Germany vanadyl sulfate is not approved as a mineral.
