Vandoren

Vandoren is one of the best known manufacturers of mouthpieces and reeds and accessories for woodwind instruments. The company was the first, established the reeds for sale worldwide. Its products are now considered by professional clarinet and saxophone players as standard.

History

The company was founded in 1905 by Eugène van Doren, a former clarinetist in the orchestra of the Paris Opera. At this time featured clarinet player their reeds forth itself. Since van Doren reeds produced a good sound, his colleagues bought it from him.

To simplify manufacture, van Doren developed a manufacturing machine which was driven by a crank. The first reeds were prepared in the dining room of his Paris apartment; finally moved van Doren his profession entirely on the reed production and built a factory in the Paris district of Montmartre on ( Rue Lepic 51).

Eugène van Doren's son Robert ( b. 1905 ) also learned to play the clarinet, studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and took a first place there. Since he also wanted to be a professional musician, he went in 1928 for a year on a concert tour of the United States, where he appeared as the first French clarinet soloist in New York's Radio City Music Hall. The sound of his instrument fell, so that the leaves were also popular in the United States. In 1935, Robert Van Doren took over the company and expanded it through the acquisition of an additional manufacturing facility in the Rue Lepic 56, which is the ancestral home of Vandoren today. He developed the 5RV mouthpiece.

Robert's son, Bernard Van Doren joined the family business in 1967. Under its employees, inter alia the nose series B45 have been developed reducing the manufacturing tolerance of the tube sheets to less than 0.01 mm and increasing production considerably. In 1990, he took over the management of Vandoren. After the workshops were moved to Bormes -les- Mimosas ( Var ) to areas of the raw material reeds. Paris headquarters are now testing and rehearsal rooms for musicians and the central action Espace partition with clarinet and saxophone literature.
