Varanger Peninsula
Geographical location
Varanger is the area in the extreme northeast of Norway. It consists of the Varanger Peninsula, Varanger and its southern shoreline ( Sør -Varanger ) and belongs to the province of Finnmark ( Finnmark fylkeskommune ).
Larger towns are Berlevaag, Vardo, Vadsø (capital of Finnmark ) and Kirkenes. The main industries are now the fishing and tourism. The extraction of iron ore in a mine near Kirkenes ( Bjørnevatn ) was set in 1996, but now resumed. Kirkenes is the northern turning point of the Hurtigruten ships.
A part of the peninsula belongs to Varangerhalvoya National Park.
