Varmahlíð

Varmahlíð (Eng. "Warm Slope ") is a small community in the Icelandic community in Skagafjordur in the region Norðurland vestra with 138 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009).

Geography

Varmahlíð is located in a thermal area with greenhouses. The village lies at the foot of a wooded hill Reykjarhóll. About three kilometers south-west is the court Víðimýri. Through this the river Víðimýrará, the west flowing past Varmahlíð later flows. East of Varmahlíð flows Húseyjarhvísl, further east of the powerful river Héraðsvötn.

History and Tourism

The place that has a nursery, developed due to its location as a transport hub to a service center for the region. In the village there is a supermarket with post office, a fast food restaurant, a gas station, a bank, a tourist information center, a campground, a swimming pool and a hotel. The town is the seat of a riding tours and a river rafting tour operator.

Traffic

Varmahlíð is located on the ring road ( Hringvegur ), which leads east to Öxnadalsheiði. From Varmahlíð from the road leads after 75 Glaumbær and after Sauðárkrókur, the largest city in the region.

The distance to Reykjavík is 294 km and it is 94 km to Akureyri.
