The Varuna (Hindi: वरुणा Varuna [ ʋʌrʊɳa ] ) or Barna (Hindi: बरना Barna [ bʌrna ] ) is a small left tributary of the Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Varuna rises 15 km northeast of Handia in Allahabad district in the flat terrain of the Gangetic plain of Uttar - Pradesh East. From there, it flows meandering towards the east by the districts of Sant Ravidas Nagar and Varanasi. In the north of the city of Varanasi it flows into the Ganges.

Although as little river noteworthy that Varuna is of some importance because of its association with the sacred for the Hindus city of Varanasi. Under the name of Varuna or Varana he is mentioned in the Puranas. According to the traditional conception of Varuna marked with the Ganges and the river Assi in the south of the limits of Varanasi as a sacred space. The name Varanasi is therefore derived from the names of rivers Varuna and Assi. More likely, however, that only the Varuna River, which was known in the older literature also under the name of Varanasi, was eponymous for the city.
