Vasily Bartold

Wilhelm Barthold (Russian Василий Владимирович Бартольд, Vasily Vladimirovich Bartold; * 3 Novemberjul / November 15 1869greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † August 19, 1930 ) was a Russian and Soviet orientalist, anthropologist and historian who in the wake of Wilhelm Radloff is considered the greatest authority in the field of Turkish Studies.

He taught at the St. Petersburg University. From 1918 to 1921 he was director of the St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.

Barthold provided important work on the history of western Central Asia, Iran, Islam, the Caliphate and the Oriental. He was at times as an emigrant professor in Turkey.
