Vasily Kalafati
Vasily Pavlovich Kalafati (Russian Василий Павлович Калафати; * 29 Januarjul / February 10 1869greg in Evpatoria (Crimea ). . † March 20, 1942 in Leningrad) was a Russian composer and teacher of composition.
Kalafati was at the Conservatory of St. Petersburg student of Nikolai Rimsky -Korsakov. From 1907 to 1929 (from 1923 as professor ) he taught composition and music theory there. Among his pupils were Alexander Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky and Heino Eller.
He has composed an opera ( Cygany, after Pushkin), a symphony in A minor, the symphonic poem Legenda ( with whom he won a prize at the International Schubert Competition 1928), an overture and a polonaise for orchestra, chamber music, piano pieces and songs. Stylistically oriented to his teacher Rimsky -Korsakov, his compositions remained largely unnoticed; but he was one of the most important Russian composition teachers of his time.
Kalafati been victims of the German siege of Leningrad.
