Vāsishka

Vaschischka was a ruler of the Kushan. His dating and ordering are controversial.

Vaschischka is known from four inscriptions. They are dated to the years 20, 22, 24, and year 28 of a Kushan era. The older research was based on a single Kushan era and dated the ruler in the second century AD, and saw in him the successor of Kanishka I, who reigned together with his brother Huvischka whose government years overlap with those of Vaschischka. Vaschischka was the father of Kanishka III. ; the latter is known from an inscription of the year 41.

Yet, recent studies indicate a second Kushan era, which dates from the third century Vaschischka. The date 41 therefore corresponds to the year 250 AD

The inscriptions of Vaschischka were found in Mathura (now in India) and give a hint to its sphere of influence. Vaschischka is also known from coins, but their legends are difficult to read, which is why he could not be identified for a long time on coins.
