Vassilis Rapanos

Vasilis Rapanos (Greek Βασίλης Ράπανος, even Vassilis Rapanos Th, * 1947 in Kos) is a Greek economist. He was assigned as Minister of Finance in the government of Prime Minister Andonis Samaras, not assumed his duties due to illness but to.

Life

During the military dictatorship, Rapanos involved in the resistance, 1969, he was arrested and spent four years in Greek prisons.

Rapanos studied business administration and economics at the Economic University of Athens (then Higher School of Economics Athens - Ανωτάτη Σχολή Οικονομικών και Εμπορικών Επιστημών ). There he completed his formal training from in 1975; 1977, he acquired a Masters degree in Economics at Lakehead University in Canada and his PhD in 1982 at Queen's University in Canada.

Career

He worked at the Centre of Planning and Economic Research ( KEPE ) in Greece, first as a research assistant and later as a researcher. Since 1992 he has taught at the University of Athens Economic Analysis and Public Sector Economics. His research interests were in the field of taxation, the role of the state in the economy and finances of the European Union.

In addition to his scientific and research activities Rapanos held various positions for the Greek government operates, so as advisor to the Ministry of Finance, as Head of the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Mission of Greece to the OECD. From 1995 to 1998 he was first deputy governor and then governor of the National Mortgage Bank of Greece until the bank in 1998 with the National Bank of Greece merged. From 1998 to 2000 he was Chief Executive Officer of OTE. From 2000 to 2004 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He was also president of the National Union of Greek banks and most recently CEO of NBG. In the formation of a coalition government of New Democracy, PASOK and Dimokratiki Aristera he was appointed as a non-party, but the PASOK of related expert of Finance.

On the way to its intended sworn in as Minister of Finance Rapanos suffered on June 22, 2012, an attack of weakness and was admitted to a hospital. After another three days, he decided not to run the ministerial office. Behind his retreat also political reasons were suspected.

Rapanos had practiced in 2011 in a scientific publication harsh criticism of the Greek financial policy.
