Västanfjärd

Västanfjärd [ vɛstanfjæ ː rd] is a former municipality in the eastern part of the Archipelago Sea off the coast of Southwest Finland. It is located on the island Kimitoön in the eastern part of the Archipelago Sea off the coast of the landscape Varsinais- Suomi. In early 2009 Västanfjärd joined with the other two together on the island located communities Kimito and Dragsfjärd the new community Kimitoön ( Kimito ).

The territory of Västanfjärd had an area of ​​97.10 km ², and contained the southeastern part of Kimitoön, the second largest island in the Finnish Baltic Sea waters and about 80 smaller islets. The municipality had last 790 inhabitants, of which 90 % Finland Sweden. Since 1993, the community was officially bilingual with Swedish as majority and Finnish as a minority language. Until the 1920s Västanfjärd was an important center of sailing and had its heyday up to 1,700 inhabitants. In addition, agriculture and fishing are traditional lines. The Old Church of Västanfjärd is a simple timber for the years 1759-60. After the old church had become too small, in 1910-12 the New Church was built by Västanfjärd. This represents the style of national romanticism; as a building material was gray stone.
