Velada (Mazatec ritual)

A Velada was a shamanic ritual of Mazatec, which often psychoactive mushrooms were consumed. It served to heal sick people. Here, a female shaman and the patient had taken the mushrooms and obey the holy words from the spirit world.

As the first man from western cultures R. Gordon Wasson was allowed to participate in a Velada. The mushroom cult and the Veladas became famous especially by Maria Sabina, a Mazatec shaman.
