Velimir Kljaić

Velimir Kljaić ( born February 10, 1946 in Šibenik, Yugoslavia; † August 12, 2010 in Zagreb) was a Croatian handball player and handball coach.

Career

Kljaić came relatively late to the handball and began his career with RK Medveščak Zagreb. There he was discovered by Vlado Stenzel. For Yugoslavia the defensive specialist played five internationals. After his playing career Kljaić was handball trainers. Until his death after a long illness, he worked as an expert for the Croatian Radio and Television.

In Germany he was from 1984 to 1988 Coach of TuSpo Nuremberg. With the team he got out of the second division to the first division. Then Kljaić moved to SG Wallau mass home, which he coached from 1988 to 1992. With this team in 1992 he became German Champion and German Cup. In recognition of these achievements, he was in the same year " Handball Coach of the Year ". At season's end Kljaić then went to league rival TV Großwallstadt, where he remained until 1994. It was followed by two years as coach of TUSEM food until it again until 1998, the SG Wallau Mass Home coached by 1996. In parallel, he was coach of the Croatian national team. With the selection of Croatia in 1996 he became Olympic champion in Atlanta. He then went for a few years back to Croatia to Zagreb Badel. With this team Kljaić twice won the Croatian league and cup victory, and twice reached the final in the Champions League, which was lost in each case against FC Barcelona. Thereafter Kljaić coach of the national teams of Egypt and Kuwait. In 2004 he came back to the Bundesliga and trained GWD Minden -Hannover. The team he could save the league, but after only one season moved Kljaić for 2005/2006 season to VfL Gummersbach. After one season he spent " personal and health reasons " as coach in Gummersbach. In March 2007 he became coach of the acute relegation TuS Nettelstedt - Luebbecke. He was able to secure the team in the league, but resigned in the following season in February 2008 as a coach back.
