Velocity overshoot

Velocity overshoot ( in German about, velocity increase ') is an English term used in solid state physics. It describes the behavior of carriers in a semiconductor when it is subjected to an external electric field. The charge carriers are initially very strongly accelerated until they are slowed down from a certain field strength. The effect can be explained among other things by the fact that the conduction band minima has several closely spaced. From the above field strength, the charge carrier from a minimum to another ( higher-lying minimum, English higher valley ) Switch. This they achieve higher energy states and lose mobility ( be braked more sharply ).
