Velvetfish

Undefined Samtfisch

The Samtfische ( Aploactinidae ) live on the coasts of the tropical Indo-Pacific, most of the species in Indonesian and Australian waters. The name derives from the converted, tiny scales that give the fish a velvet-like appearance, but some species are scaleless.

Features

Her head is armored with spine-like outgrowths. All fin rays are undivided. The dorsal fin (not for Adventor and Peristrominous ) begins in most species directly above the eye. The first three to five spines of the dorsal fin are not typically associated with the following by fin membrane. In four species, the first three to four spines form a separate dorsal fin. The spines of the anal fin are not pronounced or absent. The pelvic fins have one hard and only two to three soft rays.

The animals are still poorly understood.
