Venta Rapid

Ventas Rumba (old German name: " Windauer hype ") is a waterfall of the river Venta ( German: Ventspils ) in Kuldīga ( German: Gold rings ), Latvia. It is located near the center of town and is referred to therein as the widest waterfall in Europe. The water of the Venta crashes on a width of 240 meters over a dolomite barrier height of fall, depending on the water level from 180 to 220 centimeters. The waterfall is approximately twice as wide as the unequal -known Rhine Falls.

Ventas Rumba is one of the main attractions of Kurzeme ( German: Courland), the distance of around 200 km from Riga, Ventspils ( German: Ventspils ) and the Baltic Sea, around 30 kilometers away. Ventas Rumba is a very well known throughout Latvia and tourist attraction well developed accordingly. To the south of the waterfall the center of Kuldīga lies with castle park and many historic buildings, which were in 2005 still largely unrenovated.

Jacob Kettler did invent the Ventas Rumba in the 17th century facilities to catch salmon leaping. The waterfall was known as the place to " be caught salmon from the air " itself. The fishing station but was closed after one of the Courland Erbherzöge while attempting to catch a salmon with his hand, had fallen into the water and drowned.

The north shore of Ventas Rumba is easily accessible from the dating from the year 1874, the longest brick bridge in Europe ( Old Bridge) reach. From here there is also a beautiful view over the Venta. In the summer months it is also possible to cross the waterfall walk across the escarpment.

Bathing in the waterfall is possible, but there are no marked or guarded beaches. Fishing is not permitted in the immediate vicinity of Ventas Rumba to the migration of fish, mainly vimba and pretend not to interfere even salmon.
