Vera Lynn

Dame Vera Lynn, DBE ( born March 20, 1917 in East Ham, London; civil Vera Margaret Welch) is a British singer. The highlight of her career she achieved during the Second World War, when she was nicknamed "The Forces ' Sweetheart".

Career

Vera Lynn began singing at the age of seven years. As a stage name she chose Lynn, the maiden name of her grandmother.

Your first radio appearance was in 1935 with the Joe Loss Orchestra. In 1939, she married clarinetist and saxophonist Harry Lewis. In 1940 started her own radio program Sincerely Yours. Their song on Wiederseh'n Sweetheart was the first single by a British artist who could reach the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. Pink Floyd's song Vera from the album The Wall is named after Vera Lynn. The text makes reference to her song We'll Meet Again from 1942, also known from the final scene of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Johnny Cash coverte that piece on his last published during his lifetime album.

With her album We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of Vera Lynn in 2009 she came again No. 1 on the British album charts and was 92 years, the oldest living singer, who was listed among the top 20.

Awards

1969 Vera Lynn was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire ( OBE), 1975, she was elevated to the British peerage by Queen Elizabeth II as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE ).
