Vermillion is a city in Clay County in the southeast of the U.S. state of South Dakota in the United States with 10,571 inhabitants ( 2010). Vermillion is the county seat ( county seat ) of Clay County and is located on the bluffs of the Missouri River. The city is home to the University of South Dakota, the second largest University of South Dakota.

History

The Lewis and Clark Expedition stayed on August 24, 1804 in what is now Vermillion, which was visited in May 1843 by John James Audubon, to explore the local birds. The city was founded in 1859 and received 1873 local self-government. Three-quarters of Vermillion was flooded in 1881 by a Missouri flood.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 9765 people in 3647 households and 1801 families. The population density was 984.4 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.95 % White, 1.29 % African American, 3.37 % Native American, 2.46 % Asian, 0.38 % from other races, and 1.56% mixed race. 1.07 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3647 households out of which 25.8 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 38.5 % were married couples living together, 9.2 % had a female householder with no husband, and 50.6 % were non-families. 34.1 % of all households are made up and in 7.8 % have someone living alone aged 65 years or over only. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.90 persons.

In relation to the entire town the population was composed of 17.5 % under the age of 18, 36.2 % from 18 to 24, 24.5% between 25 and 44 years, 13.4% between 45 and 64 years and 8.4% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 24 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.9 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 24,095, and the median income for a family was $ 40,109. Males had a median income of $ 28,180, women $ 20,975. The per capita income was $ 13,909. 16.2 % of families and 26.2 % of the population were below the poverty line (including 19.0 % of children and 14.8 % of people over 65 years ).

90.7 % of people over the age of 25 have a high school education, 45.4 % have at least a Bachelor's degree and 21.2% have a diploma.
