Very Light Jet

A Very Light Jet ( VLJ, English for very light jet aircraft; Minijet ) is used since the beginning of the 21st century term for small, approved for operation by a single pilot, jet planes, the three to six passengers can carry. With a maximum take-off weight of less than 4540 kg (10,000 lb) they are lighter than the traditional types of aircraft designated as business aircraft in the rule. The term Very Light Jet was mainly used by the manufacturer Eclipse Aviation, other manufacturers, such as Cessna, however, its use avoided completely or use it explicitly not ( Embraer, Stratos Aircraft). This is probably mainly due to the load of the designation by the liquidation of Eclipse Aviation.

Generally

Several models of VLJ are being developed for different manufacturers or are nearing series production. They are all equipped with modern avionics and a glass cockpit. Very Light Jets are designed so that they have lower operating costs than conventional jets and 900 meters short take-off and use runways.

NASA and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA ) to support the development of these light jets and expect that they will be used in the future in a big way as air taxis for point-to- point connections. The Small Aircraft Transportation System ( SATS ) - a joint research project of NASA, FAA, small airfields and local aviation authorities - would allow flights in regions that are not yet served by the airlines.

Prerequisite for such air services on demand are a low cost structure and a high demand. Your actual feasibility is among the experts of the industry is still controversial. The first VLJ to be put into service in the year 2006.

In total, over 4,800 VLJ have been ordered from various manufacturers so far. Alone for the European market should it be found about 800 in the order books of the VLJ manufacturers. One of the first Air Taxi services in Europe based on VLJ is prepared, among other GlobeAir from Austria.
