Vicente Yáñez Pinzón

Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (c. 1462; † after 1514) was a Spanish navigator and explorer. 1492 he took over as captain of the caravel Niña, along with Christopher Columbus and his two brothers, Martín Alonso Pinzón and Francisco Martín Pinzón, the first trip to the new world.

1499 Pinzón sailed to the South American coast. On January 26, 1500, he reached the coast of present-day Brazil, where he went ashore in today Pernambuco. Because of the Treaty of Tordesillas Spain had no claim to this territory, but Pinzón christened the place Cabo de Santa Maria de la Consolation ( "Cape St. Mary of Consolation "). Furthermore, he discovered a mouth of the Amazon, and probably also the river Oiapoque.

1505 Pinzón was appointed governor of Puerto Rico. After 1523 no records exist more about him.

For the 500 - year anniversary of the discovery of Brazil was erected on 19 November 1999 in Palos de la Frontera, a monument in his honor.
